Vicky K’ulub Lowe’s art depicts an intrinsic connection with nature and combines contemporary and ancient Maya visual traditions. She works mainly with oil and acrylic on canvas to capture the vibrancy of living nature. Her artistic and activist work is focused on community-building, raising awareness on indigenous rights, and the preservation of indigenous traditions.
Vicky’s work is directly influenced by her personal history. As the daughter of a Tzeltal Maya mother and a caucasian archaeologist father, she was experienced various aspects of living and ancient Maya traditions. Witnessing the Zapatista uprising in her native Chiapas, Mexico against the government made her uniquely aware of the disparities and inequalities that her own family also suffered. Thus, the central purpose of her art is to fight against the marginalization of indigenous peoples, to strengthen native identities, and provide a platform to preserve indigenous ancestral knowledge. Driven by her experience as immigrant in the United States, she also aims to make visible, celebrate, and recognize the diverse identities of immigrant populations while challenging their marginalization by the dominant culture.

Equinoccio de Otono Fall Equinox |
Celebrating the harvest and honoring the main foods of my ancestors. Corn, beans and squash are the most important crops in some Native American cultures. The seeds are planted together and they help each other grow. I have memories of planting milpa with my grandparents in Mexico, but it wasn’t until this year that I learned the three seeds growing together are called “The three sisters"....Celebrando la cosecha y honrando los principales alimentos de mis antepasados.El maíz, los frijoles y la calabaza son los cultivos más importantes en algunas culturas nativas americanas. Las semillas se plantan juntas y se ayudan mutuamente a crecer. Tengo recuerdos de plantar milpa con mis abuelos en México, pero no fue hasta este año que supe que las tres semillas que crecen juntas se llaman "Las tres hermanas".
